Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

Sweet potato pie is a popular side dish and dessert offering in the Southern United States. It's most commonly served during the Thanksgiving and/or Christmas holidays. The dish is similar in many ways to pumpkin pie, but many Southerners prefer sweet potato pie to pumpkin pie during the holidays.

Sweet potato pies are always served without a top crust. The filling of the pie is a custard made from sweet potatoes, sugar, milk, and eggs. (Some vegetarian and vegan versions of the dish omit the milk and eggs, or they replace those ingredients with vegan equivalents.)

A Recipe:

Sweet potatoes, cinnamon, and nutmeg combine to make a delicious fall pie.

Ingredients:

  • 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup softened room temperature butter
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 and 1/4 cups of white sugar
  • 1 and 1/4 cup of light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 5 large eggs, beaten well
  • 3/4 cup of evaporated milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 2 (9 inch) unbaked pie crusts
  • Optional: 1 cup crushed pecan pieces
  • Yield: 2 9 inch pies

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (163 degrees C).
  2. On the stovetop over medium heat, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add sweet potato cubes and cook until fork tender, approximately 30 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes, then mash. For a finer texture, the mashed sweet potatoes can be run briefly through a blender or food processor.
  4. Using a large bowl and a mixer set to medium low, combine the mashed sweet potatoes, softened butter, vanilla, white and light brown sugars, nutmeg, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  5. Whisk together eggs and milk in a smaller bowl.
  6. Turn mixer to medium high and slowly add the milk and egg mixture.
  7. If using nuts, gently fold them into the pie filling mixture.
  8. Pour filling into pie crusts and bake for 60 minutes or until pie has set.

Remove from oven, cool and serve.

Serving suggestions:

Warm sweet potato pie is delicious with either vanilla bean ice cream or a whipped topping. Sweet potato pie can be served warm or chilled.

Sweet potatoes are a great source of fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Look for sweet potatoes with a darker flesh as these contain more vitamins than the lighter fleshed varieties. While sweet potato pie is traditionally enjoyed in the South as a holiday pie, sweet potato pie is good year round. For added flavor consider substituting a flavored liquid coffee creamer such as a hazelnut creamer in place of the evaporated milk.

About Me

I'm from the South, and I grew up eating sweet potato pie. In fact, it's my favorite dessert, and if I can reach more people with the good word about sweet potato pie, then I feel like this website will have done a good thing for people in general.

My favorite version of sweet potato pie is on this page, but I've included several other versions of the dish on the site as well. I've also included a couple of other sweet potato dishes for variety's sake.

The best news about sweet potatoes is that they offer numerous health benefits. They're loaded with Vitamin A, and they also contain large amounts of Vitamin C and manganese. They're also naturally low in fat and sugar (the sweetness comes mostly from enzymes, not sugar) and high in fiber and antioxidants.
